What is Trocoxil?
Trocoxil is a medicine given to dogs in tablet form, and requires a prescription from your vet. . The active ingredient in Trocoxil is called Mavacoxib which belongs to a group of drugs called NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs).
How does Trocoxil work?
Trocoxil works by blocking an enzyme called cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2). This is an enzyme that is involved in producing prostaglandins which are involved in pain and inflammation. Trocoxil blocks the production of prostaglandins thus reducing pain and inflammation caused by damage to the joints.
How is Trocoxil presented, and what is the doseage?
Trocoxil is available as triangular chewable tablets in five different strengths: 6,20,30,75 and 95 mg. Trocoxil is given at a dose of 2mg per kg body weight, immediately before or with the dogs main meal. There should be a gap of two weeks between the first and second doses, after which it is given once a month. The duration and dose of treatment will depend on the weight and type of animal and condition to be treated. The recommended treatment time is no longer than 6 months. If a dog experiences any side effects, treatment should be stopped and you should consult your vet for advice. Trocoxil must not be used in dogs aged less than one year old or weighing less than 5kg. It must not be used in dogs with problems affecting the stomach or gut, including ulcers or bleeding and dogs with kidney or liver problems.Trocoxil should also not be used in pregnant or lactating dogs.
